Building Bridges: Bill Barlas on Transforming HubSpot Integration Value In our continuing series introducing the founding Profoundly Pros who are...
When the Let's Build Profoundly series set out to showcase the experts shaping HubSpot's future, we knew technical implementation excellence would be a crucial piece of the story. In this episode, we're joined by Anton Bujanowski, whose journey from designer to distinguished HubSpot developer offers unique insights into how technical expertise creates lasting ecosystem value.
Anton's perspective comes at a pivotal moment for the HubSpot ecosystem. As the platform rapidly evolves with new capabilities like UI extensions and custom applications, his deep understanding of both design principles and technical implementation helps bridge the gap between possibility and practical value.
Anton's path into HubSpot development began with web design at age 13. "I fell in love with websites and somehow saw the future in this kind of thing," he shares. His early experiences modifying existing designs in GIMP (before having access to Photoshop) sparked a curiosity that would shape his entire career.
This foundation in design would prove invaluable as Anton transitioned into development. "I'm a designer. I'm not a developer by any means," he explains. "Development was always something that I do because I want to bring my design ideas to life." This designer's mindset - focusing on the end-user experience while building technical solutions - has become increasingly valuable as HubSpot's capabilities have expanded.
Anton's first encounter with HubSpot came during what he calls "the stone ages" - when the platform was known as COS (Content Optimization System). His initial struggles with the platform proved valuable: "I had massive problems because I couldn't get my head around that. But I saw the whole potential somehow."
This ability to see potential through complexity has guided his approach to development, particularly as HubSpot has transformed from a marketing tool to a comprehensive business platform. His experience demonstrates how technical expertise must evolve alongside platform capabilities.
A turning point in Anton's journey came through the HubSpot community. After receiving help early on, he made a conscious decision to give back: "I got better with the help of the community. And at some point, I've just decided, okay, somebody helped me. So I will give something back."
This commitment to community contribution led to his role as a Community Champion and co-leader of Developer Hug, which has grown to over 550 members in just one year. His experience shows how individual expertise can multiply through community engagement.
One of Anton's most powerful insights relates to HubSpot's approach to development: "If you can think of it, you can technically build it." However, he emphasizes that this flexibility must be balanced with sustainability. The platform's guardrails, often seen as limitations by newcomers, actually enable more sustainable long-term solutions.
As Anton prepares to lead a session on atomic design at the March 6th Profoundly Kickoff Event, his vision for the ecosystem emphasizes breaking down complex solutions into reusable components - not just for websites, but for all aspects of HubSpot implementation.
"You can technically apply the atomic approach to almost every aspect of your life," he explains. This philosophy of building sustainable, scalable solutions through well-designed components offers a powerful framework for the ecosystem's future.
